Marlborough Sounds
After two months in New Zealand I've met so many people and seeing as they don't all speak Dutch (quite disappoiting actually) I decided to start writing in a more common language so everybody can keep track of what I'm doing.
Last week Martha and I headed out to the sounds. After a slight detour, Martha's navigation skills need some work ;-), and a lot of curves we arrived in Portage both feeling sea sick. After some fish and chips we started our market research of Portage. They call it a town but it actually just consists of a hotel, a backpackers and a shop. On the hillsides we counted 10 houses! The backpackers was 30 dollars and looked crappy and cold so we decided to take a lot in the posh looking hotel, as the lonely planet said it also included a backpackers for only 25. That turned out to be right and to this day can't figure out how, with only two places which are right next to each other, the prices can deviate.
We made use of the spa and even did it properly by jumping in the freezing outside pool afterwards! Feeling all relaxed we settled ourselves down in the lounge with roaring fire. Ordered gin and tonics and wedges with sour cream and sweet chilly sauce. Our peaceful moment was interrupted but Lance. At first we thought he was very drunk but he turned out just to be very entertaining. He told us some of the history of the sounds and although we didn't understand to much of it, seeing as he didn't seem to finish his sentences, it was quite interesting. He gets most of his facts form a book he calls his bible. We figure the book most probally contains pictures cause at the sight of our books he said that was to heavy literature for him. He invited us to come to his place the next day. Both Martha and I weren't in the least bit tempted especially after he mensioned he had a big bag of surprises for us, hmmm. Somehow he was very persistent and started drawing us a very detailed map of the region. 10 minutes later he started explaining and another 10 minutes later mentioned: "but my house isn't down there". We blame the alcohol but one look at Martha and we burst into laughing. This was our first encouter with Lance but little did we know more would follow.
The next day we had coffee at the shop and did some negotiating. Jason and Michael, who we had met in Picton and both worked at the shop/backpackers, had told us about the possibility to stay 2 nights and get a kayak for free. But the weather wasn't on our side and it seemed too cold to go kayaking. They also rented out sailing boats and after studying the prices and asking in our most innocent way we managed to get a 25ft boat for free with 3 nights! We booked for friday to sunday cause that day we where going to drive a bit further on the sounds, stay at Hamana lodge and the come back.
Feeling very good about ourselves we got in the car and headed for mt Stokes. It was cold, cloudy and about to snow but nothing was going to stop these girls. We did make a deal, if we hadn't hit the summit at 14u we had to head back because we didn't want to risk being stuck in the dark. The track was quite challenging, steep and a lot of rocks but it was all worth it because after 20 minutes of climbing we hit the snowline and entered winterwonderland. Everything was white and as we where the only ones stupid enough to go out in this weather, the fresh snow crunched under our boots. It was spectacular! Eventually we decided to head back at 13.30 as it was getting so cold, the wind was fierce and our bums were frozen from sitting down to have lunch. This turned out to be perfect timing cause when we returned to the car it started snowing/raining which didn't stop till saturday!
Cold and tired we arrived at Hamana lodge and are first reaction was: Oh my god wow! The BBH folder had said that most people react that way and it was true. We had the place to ourselves, arranged the couch right in front of the fire, which Murray had started the minute we had called 4 hours earlier, so it was nice and warm. I made a typically Dutch meal for Martha: Zuurkool stamppot. Jummie! And for desert we had Murray's home made chocolate pudding. We spent the rest of the night cuddled up by the fire reading and writing our diaries.
The next morning it was still pouring down so we stayed in the same position as the night before till about 14u. And even then we only moved form this nice and warm place because we had to be in Portage before 17u. We where going to meet up with Jason and Michael who were returning after spending a full week in Picton for their course. So we were looking forward to a good night in the pumping bar, which is only open on Friday and Saturday so we figured all the locals would come down.
After arriving in Portage we did a small walk so we wouldn't feel to guilty about sitting aroud all day and eating a lot of chocolate. Martha and I both seem to be addicted and the amount of chocolate we consume is unbelievable.
After a quick dinner we joined our new friends in the bar. But not before we met Sam and Louis. These two guys tried to impress us by eating dirt and making a point of them always being at the bar on Friday. Some quotes (you have to imagine them standing there leaning agains the doorpost in a cool manner) "So eh, what time are you gils heading down to the bar" "Me and Louis always come down on Friday, no school tomorrow you see". We had a hard time not to laugh as they were very serious and 8 years old!
In the bar we met up with Lance (who by the way has a website Lance live, which is hilarious but to understand that you'll have to meet him), Neil (the bartender from the hotel who was now impersonation the Hunchback of the Notre Dame. Ok he hurt his back but it still was funny seeing him trying to carry 4 jugs of beer al bent forward), Craig (who just stood in a corner watching the big screen wearing a long raincoat, a cowboy hat, hadn't shaved for months and big 80-ies glasses), Jason and Michael. We had the best night. Played pool, witnessed Jason's girlsfriend storm in and start a fight (He obviously should have gone home to see her and their little boy, Dakoda, after being away for a week) which was shocking to both Martha and me, and got pissed. We ended up in our own little apartment, seeing a we were still the only ones there. Paulette and Jason made up and Martha had to kick Lance out because he clearly wasn't getting our bedtime hints and preparing to leaving on his own. It was a happy ending to one of the most interesting nights I've had here in NZ.
